Why Support Works
Some people say that divorce is all too easy now a days and people enter into it lightly. In my years of giving relationship guidance and coaching as well as running this support group, I have never, not once, seen someone take the breakup of their marriage lightly. No one that I have ever met has ever walked down that isle on that beautiful wedding day thinking that they might break up. Marriage for most people is for life. That's why divorce is so difficult.
The breakup of a marriage is heightened by negative emotions, fear of the future, a need to be in control in the present which can cause unreasonable behaviours, overzealous lawyers and other factors such as addictions, guilt and shame. These are all powerful emotions that we are not always used to handling in our daily lives. This is what gives divorce it's fearful powers even before we start. For many the shame felt in their perceived failure in life can be unbearable as can the guilt for causing this or not causing this or not trying hard enough and so on. The fear of the unknown can lead to anxieties and panic and that's not even mentioning the fear of any real or perceived physical, psychological or emotional abuse. These are all powerful feelings that are hard to ignore.
I started the support group because I had so many people coming to me on a 1-2-1 basis for marriage guidance, divorce guidance and mediation who were
thinking they were the only ones feeling this way. That's when I thought to myself, "Why are these people not helping and supporting each other through these difficult times, especially out here in Dubai where our normal family support might not be present?" And so Leaves Dubai was born.
Leaves Dubai doesn't replace the 1-2-1 help that is essential in helping with the negative emotions but our support group can help you cope better and feel less isolated as you make connections with others facing similar challenges.
In our support group you'll find people who are happy to share their personal experiences of separation and Divorce in Dubai and the UAE and offer emotional comfort and moral support. They can also offer practical advice and tips to help you cope better with your situation. Our support group is very much a face to face group so we look forward to seeing you there.
The benefits of participating in our support group are many and include:
•Feeling less lonely, isolated or judged
•Gaining a sense of empowerment and control
•Improving your coping skills and sense of adjustment
•Talking openly and honestly about your feelings
•Reducing distress, depression, anxiety or fatigue
•Developing a clearer understanding of what to expect with your situation
•Sharing and receiving practical information
•Comparing notes about resources, such as lawyers and alternative options.
So if you are feeling uneasy with your present situation and don't know where to turn, come join us for a relaxed informal evening. You can come to listen or speak, we don't mind, we are here to support.
